Post subject:  Internet Providers: Low Upload speeds, Why?

We are with Cyta for Broadband, but I see that other ISPs are similar. and we get a good download
speed of 10 Mb, but only 0.8 Mb upload.
I am not a "techy" but can anyone please explain, in simple lingo, why the download
speed is so much higher than the upload speed? Why can't they just increase upload speed
to the same as the download speed?
Thanks,
Amos.

To download a Web page or the individual elements, the computer must first send a request to download. This represents only a fraction of the overall bandwidth necessary for browsing the Web, which is why so many Internet service providers sell services with upload speeds a fraction of the download speeds.

Thank you. I thought there must be a reason they all do it.

Your connection will be ADSL, which stands for Asynchronous Direct Subscriber Line, meaning downloads are quicker than uploads, mostly for the reason given above.

You can also have SDSL, where the S stands for synchronous, meaning that up and down speeds are the same.

ISPs usually offer a higher upload speed at an extra cost.
