"Coordinated efforts of Famagusta police have led to the arrest of 12 men suspected to have taken part in the alleged gang rape of a 19-year-old female tourist in Ayia Napa.

The 19-year-old filed a report to police on Wednesday, claiming that she was raped by 12 men, all Israeli nationals, in the Ayia Napa hotel where she has been staying during her visit.

The men arrested in Ayia Napa and Paralimni are expected to undergo questioning within the day, while the 19-year-old will be medically examined."

How absolutely awful

Hope that they are all jailed

And that they do NOT get let off and sent home to Israel for this horrendous crime as if they had done nothing

How horrendous for this young 19 year old girl to have had to go through this vile crime

Totally horrendous crime and if proven guilty, I also hope they get a long sentence that must be served in Cyprus

Before anyone comments, I AM NOT anti-Semitic and have several Jewish friends but unfortunately like me, they have found and commented that this seasons influx of Israeli tourists ‘in Coral Bay’ are incredibly rude and arrogant.

My husband's place of work received a glowing review online from an israeli tourist, HOWEVER the tourist claimed he'd never encountered such rude disrespectful taxi drivers and perhaps the business would consider changing their contractor! On further investigations it appeared the tourist had been (GROSS ALERT SORRY) repeatedly picking his nose and wiping it on the car seat, when asked TWICE not to do so he did it again forcing the taxi driver to pull over and ask him to get out of the vehicle!

I'm not anti Semitic either and have many happy memories of holidays to israel and the lovely people BUT those who holiday here for some reason are not the most pleasant!

Do you remember the Istraelis last year who hired a boat from Latchi watersports and despite being warned not to go further than a particular point on the coast took it for a joy ride to Ayios Georgios before beaching it?

How terrible, that poor girl will be traumatised for life.

My friend Saul and his wife were in Siriani (Coral Bay) in the outside seating area. An Israeli family of 9 wandered in and sat down at a table…..they proceeded to eat the ‘take away’ they had purchased in another establishment.
When challenged, they stated that since the seats were in a ‘public / outside area they were ‘entitled’ to use them just like in Israel. When asked to leave they became very aggressive. They did leave but it was later discovered they had taken 4 sets of cutlery and 2 cotton napkins with them!!!!

We where in Elisaveta and 2 older Israeli couples came into have lunch

Those concerned are scum and must face the full force of the law.
It is not just Israel who have some young yobs in their population with little or no
regard for the law, and no respect for anyone. It is also the case in most western countries,
including Cyprus itself, and the UK.
I feel very sorry for the victim in this case, and hope she makes a full recovery quickly.

The teenager, who is British, called police in the early hours of Wednesday morning to allege that she had been attacked in a hotel at the party resort on Cyprus.

Twelve Israelis were arrested and as news of the arrests spread, violence broke out as a group of Britons beat up Israelis who they believed were connected to the alleged attack, Israel's Keshet 12 News reported.

Three of those arrested have since admitted to having sex with the woman, though all claim it was done 'with consent and love'."

The truth will no doubt emerge in due course.
But as I said in my previous post there are unruly yobs in many countries, and in many such cases
alcohol is often a contributory factor.

I don't want to overdo this, but I have friends who live and work in Ayia Napa and they dread the Israeli boys coming this time every year. They describe them as feral! Yes, they have bad people in every country, but these lads seem to consider behaving badly in Cyprus to be part of a rite of passage.

The important thing though is the girl and I really hope that she is okay.

I think in Ayia Napa many 16-28 year olds act disgracefully whatever their nationality.
Israeli yobs are no better or worse than the UK ones (who outnumber them).
BTW if you thing Napa is bad now, you should have seen it back in the 1990s (as I did).
Since then it has largely been replaced by an infamous resort in Rhodos.

The twelve have been remanded in custody for 8 days to allow time for DNA tests. It is also currently the top story on Daily Mail online. I suspect the reference to them laughing and filming on their phones during the attack may have raised interest.

Right lets stop there for now, Innocent till proven guilty springs to mind, that said it is very rare for the Cypriot police to get it wrong, I am sure they would have looked into this very carefully before arresting 12 people.

Hopefully they have confiscated their phones and are checking to see what they filmed!

You are right. That is exactly what they have done!

She agrees to go back to the room with one of them, then the other eleven burst in assault her and film it while they laugh at her, but it is all her fault, plus the three that have admitted having sex with her say it was done with "consent and with love". It will be interesting to see how they can convince a judge it was done with love with eleven of their mates watching, laughing and filming it.

The more I read about this, the angrier I get!!!!!!!

I know that this was a long time ago but in 1966 when stationed up in Troodos we entertained a large party of Israeli Policemen and Policewomen. The following evening we met them again at the Grand Hotel in Platres. We met them one more time in Nicosia. All I can say is that their conduct was exemplary.

There is good and bad in every nation

The bad was out for this young woman

I believe this is relevant to the topic being discussed as the only other comments refer to very recent times.

I also agree that this type of incident is a bad reflection on Cyprus and there are good and bad people in all walks of life.

It may also be indicative of the decline in social behaviour of the culture the teens come from and in my opinion the Americanism of many cultures.

Most nationalities had a greater level of respect some 50 years ago, the was less tolerance of social misdemeanours.
It may be natural for the parents to support their young until a verdict is reached whereupon they should also condemn the actions of their young.

If the attack really was as barbaric as we are led to believe, then the blokes will get away with just a couple of years in jail. The girl will heal physically in a couple of months , but emotionally she may may never recover from it and could ruin the rest of her life. A barbaric deed deserves a barbaric punishment.

5 of them were released today and the other 7 are back in court tomorrow to be remanded again.

Meanwhile, a video posted on an Israeli website earlier this week, purporting to be of the Israeli youths in question and showing them engaging in consensual sex with a girl, has nothing to do with the case at hand, police sources told the Cyprus Mail.

“The video doing the rounds on the internet has been analysed, and it was determined that it was not filmed in the alleged victim’s room,” sources said.

They surmised the video may have been posted deliberately to lead public opinion in a certain direction.

After what happened after the hit and run murder of young Mr Birch....2.5 years for a young mans life taken!

I am no longer holding my breath for a fair outcome in term of any sentences

She was lying - fabricated it all has been arrested and will appear in court tomorrow morning charged with various offences including wasting police time!!!

Well done to the police for maybe uncovering this (if is the case). maybe she's enjoying the fame from her youtube hits.....

If you go to BBC News on-line, and click on the "Sunday Papers" - it is well reported
there, as it should be.
An Israeli lawyer (not one dealing with this case) told me today that one scam Brits
on holiday get up to is claiming off insurance/compensation from hotels they have
caught food poisoning.
This latest scam, which is what HE told me HE thinks it is, has taken place in Spain
and the Greek Islands previously.
What some ratbags will do for money! This woman should receive a custodial sentance.

But it says she has retracted her statement ....3 of the men said they had sex with her ...the others say they where filming what was going on

Well they are not guilty and I was wrong to say the police do not often get it wrong, there were a few on here who would have locked them up and thrown away the keys.

Lets all congratulate the efficiency of the police because there could have been a great travesty if they had been convicted.

That said I do believe there is more to this than meets the eye, was she drunk as well, did get out of hand and then thought there is a claim here lets wait to see what comes out at the court hearing.
