I am appalled that the rate for Scottish notes is less than for English ones, I found it out recently and asked a friend who works for the Central Bank why and he was unable to come up with a credible reason!!

How would it be if shops were selective about only accepting Euro notes from certain countries?!!

Scottish Banknotes are not legal Tender and can be refused to be accepted.

True, but in Scotland Bank of England notes aren't either. All UK notes are legal currency however. I gues the same applies to Northern Irish notes as well.

Dolly - I think shops would have some difficulty in differentating between euro notes from different countries, as they are all exactly the same.

Take your Scottish bank notes to Theo's Gift Cellar opposite Debenhams at the harbour and he or his son Mario will be more than happy to accept any Scottish,Engish or N/Irish bank notes.
At the end of the day the smart shop keepers etc that have their heads screwed on the right way take their money to Northern Cyprus to get the best rate of exchange where they know the Cyprus banks cant screw them.

P.s.......................Put it another way I use to pop into my old Cypriot Bank Managers office in Paphos regulary with British Sterling and he use to pay me top dollar out of his own wallet and thats a fact !!! And he and the bank he works for are still going strong to this day, dont ask me what bank as you would have to kill me first. :pow

THEY ARE INDEED THE SAME BUT THE LETTERS WITHN THE NOTE NUMBER DENOTES THE COUNTRY OF ISSUE

The 11 digit serial number on every note begins with a prefix which identifies which country issued it.
German notes begin with an X, Greek notes start with a Y, Spain's have a V, France a U, Ireland T, Portugal M and Italy S.
Belgium is Z, Cyprus G, Luxembourg 1, Malta F, Netherlands P, Austria N, Slovenia H, Slovakia E and Finland L.

Just checked my notes, I withdrew €500 last time I was in Cyprus as going skiing in Italy in March.
Not 1 note from Cyprus all from Italy or Netherlands.

Oh, OK you got me there. You are right for the 1st issue. However, the 2nd issue of notes only indicates the printer, not the country of issue.

Interestingly, in the 1st issue J indicates the UK as a country of issue. Wishful thinking or an appreciation of the inevitable?
