Last time we were subject to water cuts, (which are predicted) I went a got a large plastic bucket from the shops, yesterday I did the same from Carrefour but got 2. (Jumbo had none so don't waste the walk like I did).
Everytime I have a shower I have to run one and a half buckets of water before I get hot water. So as of today the water now goes into the buckets and will be used for flushing toilets and whatever other uses I need it for. It will cut my bill down a little but it will save a lot of water! :pint

We have carried on this practice since the last drought, our water bill was/is noticeably reduced.

We also used to put the bath plug in when showering and use that water to flush the toilet or water plants etc

We also do that - it's ironic that some people feel the need to wash their doorsteps and roads/pavements in front of their houses/shops EVERYDAY!
I recall when we had the serious droughts and rationing a few years ago the number of locals who went and bought extra water tanks for their properties too - such a greedy culture and not an attractive quality!

I've lived in Konia, on and off, for 7 years now.
We used to have one day on and one day off with our water.
That was in year 1.
Since then the water has never been off.
I don't have a garden so don't waste water on that, I don't wash my car...apart from the windows, I wait for rain for that.

Water costs are exceptionally low in Cyprus. Why don't they increase the cost and then people may not waste as much anyway?

Just checked the Cyprus Reservoir site. This time last year they were 88% full, now only 37.5% full. Bound to have water cuts this summer.

I thought that with the desalination plants on stream now, that there would be no need for water cuts in future.

There will be NO Water cuts in Cyprus. This was stated by the Minister for water as the desalination plants has excess capacity.

CYPRUS’ fifth desalination plant, was inaugurated in2013 by President Nicos Anastasiades in Limassol.

The agriculture minister stated at the time that the new production quantities were now sufficient to cover the island’s needs with regards to good quality potable water, in accordance with the requirements of the relevant EU Directive.

The natural water resources are insufficient to cover the increasing water needs, thus, gradually we have adopted the policy of using non-conventional water resources to ensure independence from weather conditions and consequently adequate quantities of water for our country,” he said.

Er haven't they just decommissioned the desalination plant?! I'm sure there were pics of it standing unused with an article alongside it saying what a total waste of money it had been!!

I think that was the old one in Limassol that they upgraded as per the article

are desalination plants currently operating?

how many are there?

where are they?

what is their "capacity"/capability to produce "fresh" water?

A Google search brings up this article from 2013, which answers many of your questions: http://cyprus-mail.com/2013/08/08/president-opens-fifth-desalination-plant/

I'm sure it was the one at Kouklia - will dig around and see if I can find the article - I remember thinking what a stupid time to decommission it when we're facing another drought but it'd been stood idle for so long anyway...!

Ah yes here it is - another Government White Elephant: http://in-cyprus.com/desalination-plant/

Yes, DD, you're right, it was the one at Kouklia. It's actually situated on the beach in what is called Ha Potami Forest, just below SV. I can't imagine it would take much to recommission these units though.
