...... since retirement a few years back, I have got out if the habit of wearing a suit, shirt and tie. Not that I did too much of it anyway. In my business it was mostly white coats and wellington boots!

When the occasion calls for it, I am more than happy to don a 2 piece.

However, in recent times I have noticed that the knot thst I have always used (a Windsor) is not working well. The ties that I buy have gotten much thicker, more substantial. They are a woven silk.

So ......

I researched alternative styles of knot and came across the "Shelby" style. An American chap invented it.

It starts with the tie being back to front, then, as the knot progresses it rights itself. Very ingenious and makes a perfect knot each time regardless of the type of tie.

What about the chaps on here who wears ties? What style is your preference?

I always tie a half Windsor. Not so bulky.

When I got to Proper Retirement I then Gave all my suits to charity nearly all my long sleeve shirt and all my ties apart from military ones and two just in case. I kept my blazer, sports jacket and a couple of pair of slacks, I still have a brown and black pair of high quality leather shoes. I then purchased a white dinner jacket and black trousers.

My tie knot is a half windsor.

Agreed, a half Windsor is not so bulky but when I do it, it ends up lopsided.

What is the name of the Welsh news reader on the BBC?

He wears a different tie every day, never wears the same one twice. A bit like me with socks!

Well done Artlin, it is a refreshing change to see a person who looks after himself, I always try to wear a tie if I go out to diner or to the bank, my tie was a Windsor but like you find the new ties just are not the same, so the new ties get tied as best they can using a half Windsor.

OK, it looks like half Windsor is the most popular.

When I purchase shirts, I tend to get half dozen and a tie that matches each one.

When I was MUCH younger I purchased silk tie from a small gents outfitters in London but they were very flimsy affairs.

The newer woven silk are much more wearable, the designs are so varied and prices so more reasonable.

As for shoes .... I purchased some Loakes a good few years ago. Brogues, Oxfords, even a pair of boots. I just cannot wear them out!

I saw on the news recently that the shoe makers in Oxford has ceased trading. I think the family line came to an end. They made shoes for virtually every King, Prince and Lord in the land. Churchill went there. So sad.

Wow, 246! That is about 226 more than me.

Any classics in that collection? Any "kippers"?
