Post subject:  Looking for Boric Acid

Hi guys!

Could you please kindly advise me where to find Boric Acid in the island? I need about 20 kg for my pool and it seems locals have never heard about such a thing. Borax (which is not the same) would serve as well, but I believe it has been banned in EU.

Also has anyone seen the bleach in stores here, stronger than 3%? Like 6% or more, preferable 10+? I would really appreciate any help.

Regards, Andy.

We bought some boric acid from a pharmacy...used it for the ants. Have no idea where you could get 20kg from, but you could always ask at the pharmacy.

We also bought Boric Acid powder off the Pharmacy. For the amount you want go to Chandlery shop / marine supplier. We used to buy it in Kilo bags when we had our yacht. Used it to scrub the fiberglass as well as kill cockroaches.

Andycy, may we ask what you want it for, I do believe it is great for killing roaches, never heard it being used for a pool.
Florida pools in Coral Bay have always been a help for me, if they cannot get it then you have no chance.
Again if you tell us what it is for one of us may have a suitable alternative to your request.

Thank you Paphos people for all the help! I'll try some places this Monday, except probably a pharmacy, for I"m more interested in 25 kg or so bags rather than pharmacy scale :)

lowvoltage, I'm afraid there is no substitution for boric acid in your pool, at least not within the reasonable price range. I want it mostly to stabilise PH (that feature of boron has been known for centuries) and help in killing algae, but other advantages like silky water feel and more sparkle would not hurt me as well :)

If mods wouldn't mind, here is the link, explained in great details and with some testimonials too.

Thanks Andy, very interesting read, looks a far better idea than the chemicals we all pour into our pools. I will ask around some of the pool guys I know and if successful I will PM you.

Ian, thank you very much for the tip!

They say the cheapest borax in the world is in Turkey, so I was thinking maybe I could smuggle a bag or two from the North..

The thing is - my wife's birthday is 09 of August, the relatives are coming and so on, I was so eager to give her that sparkling pool...

'Smuggling' is not a good idea .... You could miss the birthday party ;)

Also, has anyone seen a fertiliser called Solubor here in Cyprus? Any help at all would be just great!
