Social insurance dodgers in Cyprus could face prison under new proposals put forward by the government this week.

Brand new laws state that people trying to hinder or impede an official from his duties will receive a 1,700 euro fine and up to a year in prison.

Making a false statement or providing falsified documentation will be penalised with a 8,500 euro fine and/or up to three years in prison.

The stiff new government proposals have already been accepted by parliament.

Anyone working in Cyprus, regardless of nationality or residency, must register for social insurance from the District Labour Office.
