Findings from 3,000 diagnostic coronavirus tests completed on Tuesday show the virus is spreading, health minister Constantinos Ioannou said on Wednesday, while he called on people to continue to cooperate and be vigilant.

“This development is of particular concern to us because if outbreaks are left unchecked, then the spread of the virus can reach dangerous proportions,” he said.
“The data also shows that most carriers of the virus are young and have no symptoms. This raises our concerns because it increases the risk of transmitting the virus, due to the fact that people with this profile are more socially active and spread the virus, unknowingly, to more people and over a larger geographical area, which makes tracing difficult.”

In view of the results, the ministry will start to carry out another 10,000 diagnostic tests in all districts starting on Wednesday. These are expected to help identify asymptomatic carriers as well as giving a better overall picture of the situation.

“I would like to once again appeal to all citizens to faithfully follow the instructions set out in the health protocols. The first line of defence should be social distancing, limiting our socialising as much as possible, especially in places where a large number of people gather. It is also important to observe the personal protection measures, the use of face masks where needed and the frequent and thorough washing of hands.”

The minister went on to say the situation is under control and the epidemiological picture remains at satisfactory levels.

Young people have been the virus driver through out most countries
Because some are out and about socializing, protesting, partying, raving, seemingly with few self risks

I spoke to a young man here in Cyprus...he said let’s all get it...it,s only flu...then it,s gone!
I replied yes but my husband would die! He shrugged his shoulders!

In the States there where reports of covid parties
That is parties where young people actively tried to catch the virus!
Pure madness!

They are not thinking about their taking the disease to their parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, elderly, infirm, cancer patients etc
The list goes on

I wish the government would let us all know exactly where the virus spread is happening
besides Limassol, as the virus is now out in the community

If the young people carry on as they are then it will be a lot quicker to get herd immunity. I agree totally that elderly people and the infirm have to be protected (I'm one of them) but if we don't get herd immunity this virus will never stop circulating and threatening us all with every chance that it will become a lot more serious by mutating.

Sadly ...we are absolutely no where near herd immunity in any country

Billions world wide have not had the virus yet

There sadly are a lot more deaths to come

Even in Cyprus....only a tiny percentage of our 1 million people have yet had the virus
And we are an elderly, infirm, population! Just over 1000 confirmed cases out of a million plus is a drop in the ocean ...we need 800,000 to have had it for herd immunity here in Cyprus!

I do believe that in the uk herd immunity is still what the uk government has been trying also to do...whilst shielding as many elderly and infirm as they can ...yet they also are no where near to herd immunity ...they need over 55 million plus to have had it

People keep quoting Sweden as a place that let the virus develop...yet per capita in their region of the world they have lost far more lives than other countries around them...and they still are no where near to herd immunity

For herd immunity we need 80% of the billions of people around the world to have had the virus
So far they are saying 20 million have officially had the virus ...even with 60 plus millions having been infected if you add those that have had it and not been tested ....we are all still at the very beginning of this pandemic

Lockdowns, handwashing, masks wearing , distancing is all being used as ways to stop hospitals for the 5% who will become extremely ill.... to not over run the hospitals as happened in Spain and Italy...as soon as a country is over capacity for health care ...then unneeded death numbers will sadly increase of people who could have lived with proper health care had it been available

Medicines and treatments are being found and used to good effect as scientists and drs world wide try to come to grip with trying to save as many lives and the many complications of covid 19 as possible

And although young people think that they are invincible..many young people sadly have had terrible covid 19 illnesses as well as elderly and infirm people....although to lesser numbers

There is no hard evidence that herd immunity is even a possibility with regard to Covid-19 as it is a mutating virus and tests thus far appear to show that any immunity is short lived.

If that is correct then our only option is to rid ourselves of the disease, rather than persist with this idea of sacrificing a number of individuals in the hope of protecting the rest.

To rid ourselves, as I see it, we can either continue and/or strengthen the current restrictions or, if and when one becomes available, start mass vaccination.

In either event, for me, the mask stays on and social distancing continues.

Just seen this on another forum:

Cyprus’ current coronavirus reproduction number is between 1.6 and 2, experts in the government’s coronavirus taskforce said Thursday, noting that the goal is not a second lockdown, but that should our frame of mind should not be that of running a quick race, but a marathon.

Speaking at a press conference, members of the government’s team of coronavirus advisors Dr Zoi-Dorothea Pana and Professor Leontios Kostrikis said the renewed spread of the virus is occurring mostly among young, asymptomatic carriers, as the Cyprus health minister Constantinos Ioannou had warned on Wednesday.

With those R Rates .....it is out in the community and multiplying then at speed

Texas I believe was R rate of @ 1.6

All countries globally are trying to keep the R rate below 1

Very very worrying trend

Stay safe all

I wish people would stop talking about 'herd immunity' as if that were the answer to the covid-19 pandemic.
I am thinking that there is really no such thing as herd immunity or there wouldn't be such a thing as the common cold or the (real/other) flu that affects us humans all the time. ??? confused.com !!
