Thought I would check this out as my wife (non-EU) has a yellow slip, is working and paying social, so could be elligible. Unfortunately she isn't. The rules state that non-EU citizens, even if married to EU citizens, can't get a medical card in their own right even if they are paying social. We could argue whether this policy is right or wrong, but it is the current policy and that's that.

What she can do is go on mine as my spouse. Unfortunately I can't get one for another 3 years, so it's private insurance for a while yet.

Just so as you know.

Just go to UK. We pay for all sorts of people, no matter what their immigration status.

The NHS pretend to ask you whether you are eligible but don't follow it up.

So, when you get another card after three years, she will be eligible for same benefits as yourself? And what would that be? Is that free medical treatment in Cyprus? Or reduced cost medical treatment?

I think you might have misunderstood Joseph. The rules changed in 2013 so that a social security contributor needed 3 years contribution record before they could be eligible for a medical card. Those at the time who only had 1 or 2 years contributions were deprived of medial cover until they had attained a total of 3 years. These rules apply to Cypriots and non Cypriots alike and are not to my knowledge linked to being an EU national. However I could be wrong. :tumble

There is an 'article' in today's UK Daily Mail regarding Health Cards, looked at mine and found out it expires in April so I phoned Newcastle (via my pre paid Skype) and they said it would re new automatically but would renew it for me today after I gave her all the info she required. Which I did.

Forgive my ignorance. I am a Brit but have been out of the UK for quite a few years. Can you get one of these cards by post?? Hopefully don't have to visit the UK to get one

Malsue has given the link
It's 'information dependant'
Are you retired and in receipt of a UK state pension?
Are you still regarded as a UK resident?
Do you pay UK income Tax?
Where are you currently living?

Is your card one that is valid in Cyprus but not valid in the UK? Or the one NOT valid in Cyprus but valid in the UK?
There are the two types.
Both are valid in the other 26 EU Member States.
Geoff.

Mmmm!!! I have not had to use it in UK, so not really sure. We are covered here in Cyprus with the form (E121) which is renewed by the Cyprus Citizens Advice Office.

Originally the European Health Insurance Card was issued by the Cypriot Health service and then it changed back to UK issuing it about 10 years ago.

Reply to Mal:
Noted about your E121/Cyprus Health care.
Regards your EHIC might be worth checking that, i.e. which one of the two types of
UK issued one do you have. The letter that came with it will tell you exactly where it is valid, failing that you could phone Newcastle again to ask.
Geoff.
