On starting up my computer, how do I stop some programmes uploading automatically?

Which operating system (presuming Microsoft Windows) does your computer run ? 9,8 XP or Vista ?

Morning Molly

Go to 'start' then 'run' and type in msconfig
If you don't have 'run' then maybe you can just type msconfig into the search box, not sure about that one :oops:

This opens the 'system configuration' - in there is a 'start up' tab which tells you everything that starts.

Best to have a pen and paper now
Trial and error really - untick some and see what happens!!!!

You can 'slide' each bit to give more info about 'location' and stuff, which may help you to understand what each bit does.

Remember, you don't (for example) need the printer to load at start up unless you prefer to 'drive it' from the system tray/notification area

Thanks guys - I did this yesterday, so was checking what I did was right.

So by doing this, can I select whatever I want to automatically start and it wont jeopardise my computer?

Reason I ask again, is cos when computer was re-started it gave me a message about me making changes etc.

With XP its as JB says then!! What you disable will have an effect but how much and positive or negative obviously depends on the item ! :shock:

Once you have highlighted your problem you need to remove it then go back to msconfig and check all the items are enabled.

Why have them "all enabled"?

I have loads of things in my msconfig unticked - if I want them to start, I can load them as and when *I* want.

fair point J B. I tend to have stuff disabled that causes problems and then try and remedy the problem before enabling it, otherwise everything is enabled as i want it to be in the list, rather than i don't want it in the list so disable .... 6 and half-a-dozen i guess.

I had to look at my niece's laptop on Friday - there were 24 things in msconfig :!: I disabled 20 of them!

Just go to the particular program and open it.
