Hi,

Looking to move to Cyprus for 6 months next year. If we bought the car over and it was only on the island for 6 months would there be any taxes/duty/reg fees to pay?

Thanks

Sarah

Hi Sarah

I think you are best to get in touch with Customs & Excise to get an answer to your query..

If you are normally resident in another EU country e.g. the UK, you may temporarily import your vehicle for up to six months maximum, without paying any taxes of duties - http://www.mof.gov.cy/mof/customs/Customs.nsf/All/DB624764C3DCBFACC22572CF0020CAC0?OpenDocument.

We have recently been through this process - the only costs incurred were the shipping and clearing agents. Although Customs thoroughly quizzed us about our length of stay etc and we had to prove the vehicle was ours with documentation i.e. invoice, log book etc., - they were quite awkward in their approach and initially only gave us permission for 3 months thereby forcing us to return again at the end of three months to go through the same questions again to be given the further three months.

Before Cyprus joined the EU, many holiday home owners had duty free cars on V plates, which were essentially temporary imports. Permission to use the vehicle temporarily in Cyprus was granted only for three months at a time. This coincides with the amount of time you are legally allowed to stay in Cyprus as a visitor.
