A 23-year-old Indian man is in police custody after he stabbed a woman several times with a screwdriver yesterday afternoon.

The incident occurred at 4pm on Sophocleous Street, in the old part of Nicosia.
According to reports, the woman, named as 20-year-old Valentina Agathangelou, runs a shop on the street and is well known.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing shouting from inside just before she came running out, screaming for help.

“I saw blood all over the ground and a woman was in a very distressed state,” said one passer-by.

According to doctors, the victim sustained eight injuries trying to defend herself, the most serious being two stab wounds to her throat and another to her stomach.

Her condition has been described as serious but not critical.

State television reported that the perpetrator was in love with Agathangelou, who did not share the same feelings.

The Indian is facing charges of attempted murder after turning himself into police.

Juvenile crime ring

PAPHOS police are in the process of tracking down members of a juvenile gang of burglars that primarily targeted the town’s schools.

The breakthrough came on Monday night when a 16-year-old Georgian, arrested on suspicion of being a member of the gang, admitted during questioning that he and another five fellow nationals aged 15 to 17, carried out a number of burglaries and robberies from 2006 onwards.

The gang is also accused of having broken into homes, including that of former First Lady and Cyprus’ EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer Safety Androulla Vassiliou, from whom they stole a computer.

Father reports son to police

A FATHER has reported his 15-year-old son to the police over the possession of over 200 firecrackers.

According to his statement to Larnaca police, once the father discovered the Turkish-manufactured firecrackers, he felt compelled to report the incident for the safety of his son, as well as that of society.

The firecrackers are available from kiosks.
