Reports of giant hail stones on the Nicosia – Larnaca highway were broadcast on CyBC radio last night. Drivers told the station that much of the motorway ground to a halt for nearly an hour as the storm raged.

In Larnaca thunderstorms and gales caused extensive flooding and the slippery conditions were partly responsible for the death of a woman who fell from her apartment balcony.

Last night heavy thunder, lightening and rain persisted through the evening into the early hours in the south - east.

The Cyprus weather service said the rain is the result of an unstable air mass, which is affecting mainly central and eastern areas of the provinces Larnaca and Famagusta.

Several districts have reported minor power cuts and disruptions to phone and internet services.
