It sucks your blood under your skin like a vulture. That’s not pleasure, it is delirium, pain, beastly madness. A rarely performed and exceptionally bold play by Ferdinand Bruckner, written in 1926, is staged for the first time in Cyprus. Aliki Danezi-Knutsen and her associates shed light on the ambiance of an entire era, exposing the milieu within which the characters explore their subconscious and are thereby led to extreme behaviours. The music, composed specifically for the play by Monika, is performed live on stage. A prominent group of actors includes THOC award recipients, Andreas Tselepos and Niovi Charalambous. The performance is not suitable for underage spectators.

GRIEF AND RESURRECTION
Cyprus Symphony Orchestra
Soloist: Krzysztof Wrobel (viola)
Conductor: Jens Georg Bachmann

Information: Tel: 22463144, www.cyso.org.cy
Just one week, this year, between the western and eastern Easters, and the CySO has ensured that its relevant concert caters for both. A concert beginning with funereal and mourning music, with the second of the three works of the programme featuring the warm, introspective and solemn tone of the viola, lending, some would venture to say, a melancholy note to the first part of the evening given the imminent commemoration of the Divine Passion. Easter however is also a time for rejoicing, for the Resurrection of the Christ inevitably follows His Passion, and it’s in this spirit that the orchestra’s Artistic Director and tonight’s conductor has chosen Haydn’s Symphony no. 97, the last in a long line of brilliant and festive "trumpet and drum" symphonies in C major by the Austrian composer.
Programme:
W. A. Mozart: Masonic Funeral Music (Maurerische Trauermusik), K. 477
P. Hindemith: Music for Mourning (Trauermusik) for string orchestra with solo viola
J. Haydn: Symphony no. 97 in C major, Hob. I:97

Directions: The theatre is next to the Karavella bus station in the upper town, just off the Polis Road behind the petrol station. MARKIDION MUNICIPAL THEATRE OF PAPHOS, 27 Andrea Geroudi Street, Paphos. Tel: 26932571.

JUSTINE RIDDOCH as Tina Turner

Doors: 7pm, food available throughout, performance: 9pm
Justine has been singing professionally for over 27 years now and has worked extensively in theatres and on national TV, she is also a much sought after session vocalist for some of the biggest record labels in the UK. In her early career she could be seen treading the familiar cabaret scene as a dynamic vocalist and could boast knowing over 5000 songs, becoming a human juke box at venues. In 2002 that her career would change direction. After winning ITV’s “Stars in their Eyes” as Anastacia, her tribute show “Justine is Anastacia” was in great demand and she spent the next 6 years performing as her around the world. When Anastacia stopped releasing albums and her popularity waned, it was time to change direction again. Having been told on many occasions she really sounded like Tina Turner, Justine set herself the challenge to become the closest copy she could be. But this was going to take some transformation! After hours of scrutinising video footage, watching mannerisms and movements, hand making the all-important wig, deciding which costumes to copy, listening to patter and hundreds of versions of the same songs from different decades, Totally TINA was created. As with Tina, Dancers would have to be a big big part of this and surprisingly none of the band complained! A troupe of professional dancers were hand-picked, choreography based on Tina’s live shows and our own unique creations were created and the whole production was rehearsed, tweaked and rehearsed again.
“I’ve been myself a lot longer than I’ve been a tribute to a tribute to any artist and its strange sometimes to transform into my big alter ego. But you get away with an awful lot with being TINA!” Her sheer presence, her energy, her humility and dynamite vocals. If I can’t achieve success in my own right and her fans aren’t too upset, I cannot think of anyone I would rather pay homage too. I’ve never thought of myself as an impersonator and in no way ever think I can replace the legend that is Ms Turner, but I hope if she ever sees the show she will appreciate the hard work and sacrifice we have put into it just so we can keep spreading her name to her fans. I always say to our audiences at the end. If you felt for just one second you were watching Tina again then our job is done”
Directions: The venue you will be found just off the Paphos Airport road on the left behind The Base.

Yiannis Hadjiloizou and the Orphean Singers Cyprus return to Markideion Theatre in Paphos for one more take on the world’s ever favourite mass, the Mozart Requiem. It was with the same work back in 2012 that Maestro Hadjiloizou (son of Conductor and Composer Michael Hadjiloizou) had the Orpheans experience their first production with an orchestra, at a full house and a superb performance at The Annabelle. Soloists were Soprano Irina Zeniou, Mezzo Ellie Aloneftou, Tenor Antonios Koutroupis, and Baritone Andreas Iacovides. The Cyprus Philharmonic Orchestra, an establishment of the conductor himself, was again onstage. Since then, Maestro Hadjiloizou has led the Orpheans to great performances and international heights. Fauré Requiem in 2011 at Ledra Palace Hotel, Saint-Saëns Oratorio de Noêl at Markideion, Brahms Ein Deutsches Requiem in 2013 at Melina Mercouri Hall in Nicosia, Fauré Requiem anew with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra at Strovolos Theatre in 2014, followed by a phenomenal tour of Puccini’s extravagant Messa di Gloria taking off at Markideion earlier that year, flying to Vienna’s world renowned St. Stephen’s Cathedral in 2015, on to Paris’s iconic La Madeleine and on to Basilique du Sacré Coeur in Marseille in 2016, Vivaldi Gloria and Rutter Requiem at Bellapais in 2017, and Jenkins The Peacemakers in Patras in 2018, are just some highlights of the Isle of Love’s most successful and internationally recognised musical marriage.
Yiannis’ first performance of the Mozart Requiem dates back in 2006 in Boston, Massachusetts. That show was staged with the Boston Chance Orchestra & Chorus, an organisation the visionary established and run for the needs of his Public Doctoral Concert from Boston University, which also included Arnold Schönberg’s Pierrot Lunaire. The Maestro returns to Markideion with Franz Xaver Süssmayr’s completion of Mozart’s emblematic work for a third time, with guests Australian-Cypriot Soprano Christiana Aloneftis, Russian Mezzo Anastasia Maximova, Palestinian-British Tenor Marwan Shamiyeh, and Cypriot Baritone Yiorgo Ioannou. The Cyprus Philharmonic Orchestra and Maestro Hadjiloizou last starred at Markideion at an unforgettable Beethoven 9 treat for the Official Handover Ceremony of Pafos2017 late that year with the Philharmonia Voices and soloists Annemarie Kremer, Dina Strani, Nico Darmanin, and Kyros Patsalides. The all-star Orchestra and the Conductor reunite with the Orphean Singers in what promises to be yet another very special occasion, following the latter two’s return from another performance of the same work at the Megaron in Athens just a few days earlier. The first half of the concert will include Franz Schubert’s Symphony No.8 in B minor D.759, known as Unfinished.
Directions: The theatre is next to the Karavella bus station in the upper town, just off the Polis Road behind the petrol station. MARKIDION MUNICIPAL THEATRE OF PAPHOS, 27 Andrea Geroudi Street, Paphos. Tel: 26932571.

SOPRANO, OBOE & PIANO CONCERT
Tina Chester (soprano), Klaus Storm (oboe) & Natalia Lezedova (piano)
Monday 29 April 7.30pm
Music Studio Aspa Vassiliou Paphos

Tickets: €12
Box Office: Tel: 99279144
Online Tickets and Information: www.paphosmusiclovers.com
Organised by Paphos Music Lovers as part of the Spring Music Festival.
Works include: Saint-Saens, Schubert, Handel, Bizet, Liszt, Lehar, Faure, Verdi and Schumann.
Tina Chester (soprano) studied music in college and took vocal training privately to Diploma level. Although she had sung and performed on stage for much of her life, it was in her mid-30s (when asked by her new singing teacher to imagine performing at La Scala) that Tina's classical voice was discovered. She describes her whole life as being one big mix of music and dance; everything from singing in a pop band, folk music nights, serious mixed choirs, ladies choruses and many solo successes at music festival competitions. In the past she enjoyed leading roles in Amateur Operatics and Musical Theatre; has performed at weddings, funerals and corporate functions in the UK, solo serious arias with orchestras and small ensembles, annual Gala evenings, Choral works with solos or duets and has studied and taught vocal technique in her studio and at stage schools. Tina can often be heard in various concerts and shows in Cyprus where, in 2015, she performed a classical concert with Natalia Lezedova and Doros Zesimos at Technopolis 20 and in 2016 was a soloist in Evagora of Cyprus, a huge production written by Polis Charalambous, at Tala Amphitheatre.
Klaus Storm (oboe) was born in 1963 and received his first musical education at the age of six with the piano. His oboe education started with Heinz Nass (Pforzheim) and continued with Reinhard Lüttman (Paris/Münster) and Jochen Müller-Brinken (Berlin/Würzburg). Storm’s ideas about - and interpretations of - the sound of the oboe were decisively influenced by the oboists Lothar Koch (Berliner Philharmoniker) and Klaus Becker (Consortium Classicum). After his studies, Storm’s numerous performances as a concert soloist were quickly recognised and he was repeatedly honoured by the Press and by audiences. He was influenced also by the classic interpretations of the conductor of the Kammerphilharmonie Amade, Frieder Obstfeld. In addition to his membership of this orchestra, Storm also played for several years in the Deutsche Kammerakademe Neuss Am Rhein; and today, as principal oboe in the Kourionorcheter Münster, he is closely involved with interpretation of big solo parts by JS Bach and is increasingly interested in historic ways of playing Baroque music. In 2000 Storm founded the woodwind quintet Ensemble Viento and with this group undertook many tours abroad to various countries including South Africa and Venezuela. A CD production followed, attracting Press comment such as ‘A splendid album – gorgeous wind music, crystal-clear sound in perfect balance.’ Because of his passion for mixing deeply in the classic repertoire with strings, Storm founded the Oboe Stringendi Quartet. In addition to being in demand as a studio musician and orchestral player, Storm is also manager of the Kourion-Orcheter Münster. www.klausstormoboe.de
Natalia Lezedova (piano) is a graduate of the Musical Faculty of the State Pedagogical University of Russia, and she also has postgraduate studies in "Musical Art" (2012). She attended an advanced training course from the Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg State Conservatory (2013). She is also a laureate of five international competitions, among them: two first prizes as a performer-soloist (Saint-Petersburg and Moscow 2012), winner of the Grand-Prix music festival competition “Severnaya Venetsia” (2012) and first prize laureate as a concertmaster (Music Competition in Performing Arts in St. Petersburg, 2013). In recent years she has arranged many concerts in Cyprus, most of them for charity, and she has collaborated with musicians from Russia, Cyprus, Italy, French, Germany and UK.
