Programme includes: instrumental music by Greek and Cypriot composers featuring bouzouki, accordion and mandolin.
Georgia Kombou is the only female Cypriot soloist of the bouzouki. She also plays mandolin, laouto and tzoura. She is an award-winning composer whose work is inspired by Marios Tokas, the famous composer from Limassol. Born in Limassol, Georgia began playing music at the age of nine, attending piano and theory at the Greek Conservatory of Limassol. But the signs were there from an even earlier age: while very young Georgia would, she says, hold a sewing needle and a matchstick in a pretence of playing the mandolin. Of course, no parent could ignore the obvious signs, and when her father noticed his daughter’s interest, he quickly bought her a bouzouki – an instrument which has since become her trademark. Fast forward a few years and, in 1990, Georgia set off for Thessaloniki to study music, quickly building her reputation as she began to perform in concerts and make appearances in local television stations. She participated in various festivals for several years and has recently won awards for her bouzouki playing. In 2016 with her composition ‘To Diko sou Yiatrikon’ taking third place at the National Composition Prize in the ‘Traditional music today in new compositions’ category. In 2019, Georgia was awarded the Bronze Medal in several categories at Global Music Awards.
Georgia is also a member of The Instrumentalist band, consisting of herself on the bouzouki, tanbur cura and mandolin, Ariadne Papantoniou on contrabass and Konstantinos Economides on guitar and lute.

Synopsis: A man is looking for a singer he had heard on a cassette. He finds much more.
We invite you to join us in an exciting journey with Gypsy vibes and music during the screening of the movie ‘Gadjo Dilo’, which in Romani means ‘crazy stranger’, ‘crazy outsider’. The title stranger – Stéphane (Romain Duris) from Paris – is deeply in love with gypsy music, just like his father. He decides to go to Romania and search for the folk singer Nora Luca. Eventually, he ends up in the commune of Gypsies and despite the cultural differences and language barrier, Stéphane finds his place among his new friends. The amazing, unpredictable journey gives him feelings and experiences which he did not expect. But the myth of free Gypsy spirit is destroyed with the return of a young Roma from prison, who is seeking revenge on his enemy. Death brutally enters that magical world which fascinates Stéphane and nothing stays as it was before.
Tony Gatlif, the director of the movie "Exils" (2004) awarded in Cannes, is - alongside Emir Kusturica - one of the most connected to the tradition of Gypsy directors. He is a director, screenwriter, actor, and also a respected composer, and although he holds French citizenship, he identifies himself with his Algerian Gypsies ancestors (he describes the search for Algerian roots in "Exils"). "Gadjo dilo" is the last part of the Gypsy trilogy, which was opened in 1983 with the movie "Les Princes" (Grand Prix Special des Amériques at the festival in Montréal). The next part of the trilogy, "Latcho Drom" (1993) won the prestigious Un Certain Regard section in Cannes. “Gadjo Dilo” won Prize of the Ecumenical Jury and Silver Leopard at the International Film Festival in Locarno, and César Award for the Best Music. Romain Duris and Rona Hartner who played the main roles in the movie were nominated and won many prestigious festival awards in Europe, such as Crystal Star in Brussels, Prix Michel Simon, César Awards, Special Prize in Locarno.

Paphos Music Lovers Cultural Association and Konzert Kollektiv are thrilled to welcome Sydney tenor Brad Cooper (Opera Australia) for a night of glorious music making. Throw off the shackles of everyday existence, grab a glass of Sekt and take a riotous journey back to the heady world of interwar Kabarett for a soirée of operatic proportions. From the wartime spirit of Novello, the hilarity of the Comedian Harmonists via the tumult of Kurt Weill & Hans Eisler’s Berlin, the Golden Age of Lehár & Stolz’s Vienna, the passion of Piaf & Brel’s Paris, to the witty irreverence of today, Cooper sings Kabarett is a celebration of wild electric decadence and dangerously dark humour. Kabarett has wowed packed out audiences at Leighton House in London, Melbourne Recital Centre, City Recital Hall in Sydney and regional Australia.

J. Sibelius (1865 – 1957)
Andante festiv? (Cyprus premiere)
Violin Concerto in D minor, op. 47
Symphony No. 3 in C major, op. 52 (Cyprus premiere)
Join the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra on a captivating journey to the alluring musical sounds of Finland. Tonight’s programme features a musical selection that is uniquely Finnish and at the same time unreservedly individual. Jean Sibelius has been the central figure in creating a Finnish voice in music in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His music bears the aura of his native land in its references to the Kalevala, the Finnish-language folk epic, and its allusion to folk music. Yet at the same time, it is distinguished by startlingly original adaptations of common elements: a fresh outlook on orchestral colour, and unorthodox treatments of triadic harmony and musical process. In collaboration with the Embassy of Finland. Supporters: Rialto Theatre, Limassol Municipality, Paphos Municipality.
Directions: The theatre is next to the Karavella bus station in the upper town, just off the Polis Road behind the petrol station. MARKIDION MUNICIPAL THEATRE OF PAPHOS, 27 Andrea Geroudi Street, Paphos. Tel: 26932571.
