TWO FOR THE ROAD: The Chet Baker Project

Mare Mare Restaurant Paphos

Free Entrance, full drinks and food menu available
Reservations: Tel: 99298018 / 26931987
Information:
www.paphosmusiclovers.com
Part of the Paphos Music Lovers/Mare Mare First Wednesdays Jazz Series.
The project is based on a quartet with vocals, trumpet, guitar and bass focuses on aspects of the jazz repertoire that have become popular as a result of Chet Baker’s renditions with an emphasis on both his trumpet and singing years. The music is presented in arrangements and orchestrations written by Cypriot guitarist George Bizios with a heavy dose of improvisation. The ensemble strives for diversity of approach on each song in an attempt to offer an interesting musical experience for both the audience and themselves. Here's a little review Sarah Fenwick wrote for their concert at her jazz club
‘It's not often a jazz singer and a guitar duo comes along who can interpret the depth of feeling Chet Baker brought to his music, so it was a pleasure two enjoy Brussels-based vocalist Kate Petrou and guitarist George Bizios ‘Two for the Road’ performance last night at Sarah's Jazz Club. The duo's fresh song arrangements get it just right, adding their personal influence while keeping enough reference to the originals so the audience could relate to beautiful songs like ‘I Fall in Love Too Easily’. Australian-Cypriot Kate’s soprano voice is pure, mellow and sweet, her delivery is natural and delicate, observing the emotions while exhibiting a strong sense of musicianship in terms of timing, pitch and dynamics. Having studied opera, she can pack a powerful vocal punch if needed and she showed her versatility last night, easily marrying her voice to the jazz genre’s more conversational style.
Guitarist George Bizios commits to each note, making the best of it, combining fluid licks with lingering emphasis at key harmonic moments. His playing brings to mind fire and water – liquid solos inter-playing with heart-stopping breaks and a sudden blazing note catching the attention and emotions. Trumpeter Elias Ioannou is always a pleasure to listen to, he is an excellent trumpet player who’s dedicated to jazz and it shows in his playing. Importantly, Elias Ioannou did not follow Chet Baker’s influential trumpeting style of long-drawn out notes played with a mute. He paid tribute in a different way, keeping his own clean-noted runs and dynamic phrasing while bringing a new interpretation to the notes, even when played with a mute.
Directions: From the Harbour car park walk along the left side of the coast road away from the harbour and the venue will be found on the left, just past Captains Bistro, upstairs above an optician’s shop.
